JULY OPEN-AIR THEATRE "Spring 1600"
Wadham Players Theatre Company present “Spring 1600” – a comedy by Emlyn Williams in the Ampitheatre at the beautiful Capel Manor Gardens on Bullsmoor Lane in Enfield.
The play “Spring 1600” tells the adventure of young Essex country girl Ann Byrd who runs away from the boredom of her home in Essex to London in the year 1600. She soon finds herself with the famous theatre company of the Shakespearian actor Richard Burbage at a time when women were forbidden to act on stage and all female parts were played by young men in drag. Ann devises a crazy plan to disguise herself as a man in order to join the company as an actor with hilarious results.

Your ticket entitles you to access to the beautiful gardens at Capel Manor from 12 noon. The play begins at 5pm in the Capel Manor Ampitheatre. Please bring your own rugs or low-backed seating. Hot and cold meals are available before the performance and light refreshments during the interval.
For legal reasons we cannot say that this comedy “Spring 1600” was the original inspiration for the film "Shakespeare in Love" but it is very similar and this play is great entertainment for all. The play “Spring 1600” was written by the legendary welsh dramatist and actor Emlyn Williams CBE (26th Nov 1905–25th Sept 1987), the writer of a number of long remembered dramas, comedies and screenplays.
